President Obama’s promise for Earth Day (April 22) was that he would lead a fight against climate change all over the world.
Today, hearings will begin in Congress on the energy and climate change bills. There will be testimonies from three cabinet secretaries and more than a dozen industrialists, environmentalists, and labor leaders. The Center for Public Integrity has estimated more than 770 firms and interest groups have hired some 2,340 climate lobbyists in the past year to push their points of view.
The proposals involve a cap and trade system designed to systematically reduce greenhouse emissions every year, and investment in renewable and climate-friendly technologies.
This is the most ambitious attempt so far anywhere in the world to combat climate change.
